May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! We honor and celebrate the rich cultures of the AAPI community. Please join us in paying homage to generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders whose influence and contributions have enriched America and who individually and collectively remain instrumental in its success.
Unfortunately, we are witnessing a horrific and heartbreaking rise in racism and hate crimes against AAPI communities across the nation. In APS, we believe diversity is a strength in our community and stand in solidarity with all who strive to #StopAsianHate. These injustices have created a state of crisis and we must come together to make a difference.
One way to "be the change" is to celebrate our differences. APS is proud to be one of the most diverse school districts in Colorado. Walk into any APS classroom and you will be immersed in a colorful world of learning with students from different backgrounds, races and cultures. Our APS family includes individuals born in the U.S., those who emigrated to the country and others who relocated here as refugees. Through the APS Welcome Center, we support AAPI families and more to ensure they navigate our systems properly.
Our schools celebrate diversity by creating spaces and opportunities for students and families to share their ethnic foods, music, traditional clothing and more. This fosters a sense of school, community and cultural pride. We also empower APS staff with culturally- and linguistically-responsive tools to provide equitable instruction for all students.
